Need some help completing the #31daysofyeg challenge? In addition to a weekly Storify, the blog team — updates this week from Vivian Binnema and Catherine Szabo — is busy with their own adventures completing the list. Check back each week for updates!
No. 12: Support a local business and share a #shoplocal selfie
Habitat Etc. is located on the corner of 104 Street and 102 Avenue, and it’s one of those places that I’ve always meant to pop in to, but never have. Opened in December 2014, they carry home goods, accessories, paper goods and gifts made by local artists. I’ll definitely be going back there this year for Christmas presents. If guys — fathers, brothers, significant others, friends — are a little more difficult to buy for, I definitely think this shop would be a good starting place, if not a great solution for those kinds of gifts. Plus, they have a newsletter signup in-store for calligraphy, build-your-own-terrarium and weaving workshops taught by local artists. –CS

No. 14: Get more involved in politics — take a tour of the legislature, meet the candidate in your riding for the upcoming federal election or maybe even volunteer on a campaign.
On a whim, a friend and I stopped to check out the new fountains at the Federal Building Plaza at the legislature. (Since I got splashed, does that count as no. 20 — swim in the wading pools at the legislature?) We were pleasantly surprised to discover that the visitor centre is open on a Sunday, and in addition to browsing the gift shop (everything is made by local artisans) and viewing the 11-minute 4D movie about Lousie Caroline Alberta, we explored the new exhibits, which are broken down into three parts — the history of Alberta, the vote in Alberta and the tradition and procedure in the legislature. Plus, did I mention that the building itself is really nice, including a living wall? –CS
No. 18: Visit a farmers’ market you have never been to before and talk to some vendors. Learn more about #localfood
On July 14, my mom and I made our first visit to the Miller Crossing Farmers’ Market. The small but friendly market offers Edmontonians living in the northeast corner of the city a nearby market for local produce. It is, according to its website, “Edmonton’s newest market,” having opened on June 2 of this year. During my stroll through the market, I stopped to sample some beef jerky and chatted with a vendor about their MSG-free local product. My mom came away with some pickling cucumbers. –VB
