Election 2013 questionnaire response: Rudy Arcilla, Ward 5

[We sent your questions to all the Election 2013 candidates. We are posting their unedited responses in the order that they’re received. – Ed.]

Rudy Arcilla, candidate for Ward 5
In the context of our City’s growth, how will you support the development of existing communities as opposed to new neighbourhoods?

As a public servant, I need to see ALL types of proposals with regards to community development in order to make an informed decision to benefit ALL Edmontonians. All progressive proposals I will support and ALL regressive proposals I willl NOT support. I will always put the interests of ALL Edmontonians FIRST.

How will you support and promote independent locally-owned businesses in Edmonton?
Small and independent businesses must be supported and encouraged to grow. These small businesses must NOT be taxed to extinction.
How will you support local food and urban agriculture in Edmonton?
Buy and consume their products… and encourage Edmontonians to do the same. Also, continue the Sunday markets like the one here att Callingwood, the one in the downtown area, and Strathcona.
In the winter, do these in coverrd and heated venues.
How will you address Indigenous Edmontonians’ history and needs?
Continue to respect their culture and preservation of the same either in Museums or Art buildings, and in school libraries must be encouraged.
How do you envision the public transit system evolution?
All segments of the LRT from downtown to Millwoods and from downtown to Lewis Estate must be finished as soon as they are feasible.
Smart buses must continue to run and more should be added to service ALL parts of the city.
What will you do to better engage post-secondary research / students / faculty with the rest of the community?
Continue to work with the provincial govenemnt for adequate research funding since our post secondary insititution is one of the BEST in Canada and in the world. If I’m not mistaken, the “EDMONTON PROTOCOL” was developed here at the U of A.
Councillor candidates: What is the biggest challenge your Ward faces? What solutions would you seek?
Transportation to and from work for young families. The completion of the Lewis Estate LRT, will be a great help for Ward 5 residence. In the mature areas, sidewalk and street rehab must be done as well and soon. A robust snow removal program must also be done.
